General, non air-frame specific tips
Useful terms used on the radio during flight to quickly convey important information to other aircraft can be found here.
At 161 SQN, our ethos is to pass knowledge onto others. We are always keen to help you with partners to fly with or experienced pilots to help you with learning a frame of choice. Follow the instructions below to meet new people and learn:
- Join our friendly discord and accept our conditions outlined in the code of conduct. As a public member, you are able to take part and join in with any of the publicly organised activities run by members of the 161SQN discord server.
- Head over to #the-briefing-room under the TOC banner
- Introduce yourself with what frames you own and what your goals are for flying in DCS with 161 SQN
- You can also join in our voice channels. Most members will pop in to say hello if they see someone new, even if they aren't flying.
- Feel free to use the 161 Servers available to all. Please see the names of our servers below.
Feel free to reach out to anyone in Discord, or our administration team (in yellow) with any questions. For help with specific airframes, you can also ask questions under the "A/C Specific Stuff" banner, then the airframe you have queries about.
Some handy tips that apply to formation flight are
- Flight Lead should always inform the other members of the formation before turning, changing speed or aircraft config i.e. Lowering landing gear, extending flaps or speed-brake.
- Flight Members should advise if leaving/joining formation or changing position within the formation.
- Don't use the Autopilot (Flight Lead exempt), pilots with autopilot on are generally less aware of their surroundings as they tend to assume it's okay because the AP is on. The AP has made turns and other motions which were unexpected and this has almost caused crashes.
- As you get closer to other aircraft, your ability to process multiple inputs decreases. Be aware of this and use it to your advantage.
- To determine your position, look outside through the canopy
- Approach the formation in a parallel track rather than trying to fly directly behind
Having a curvature applied to your controls can be very handy for fiddly planes as it allows you to have greater precision with small movements
